There is always a place in the house that, in September, you suddenly see. The hallway once the bags have gone upstairs. The corner by the sofa, when the sun stops arriving so late. In summer that emptiness did not bother anyone: the doors were open, there were people, there was light until nine. In September the house is only the house again — and the corner asks for weight.
It is not the month for turquoise, which still smells of
holiday, nor for gold, which is not Christmas yet. It is the month for stone.
For a floor piece that does not need flowers in order to exist.
The seventy-centimetre glazed terracotta vase, in that brown
granite tone, does not pretend to be a flower holder. It works empty. The
mineral surface pulls the eye down, like a stone set in the right place:
little, and therefore enough. It sits well with dark wood, with linen, with a
wall that has grown tired of looking like summer.
70 cm glazed
terracotta floor vase, granite tone — made in Barcelos.
Seventy centimetres need air. Not against the curtain, not
behind the lamp. A hand’s width around it is enough for the piece to be read.
If you want height, one dried branch or three — olive, eucalyptus — never a
bundle that hides the glaze. Lamp light, warm. Ceiling white flattens
terracotta and makes granite look like plastic.
It is a long-season piece. It will still be right in January.
That is why you do not dress it for a month: the vase stays; what changes, if
anything, are the branches. In the north of Portugal they are shaped by hand,
with those small shifts of tone the eye is glad of when you live with the piece
every day.
If the corner is still empty, perhaps what is missing is not
another shelf. Perhaps it is only this.
